Background

Alicia García-Arias was born in Madrid (Spain). She received a five year grade in Environmental Sciences from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) in 2009 (specialist pathways: Agricultural Technology and Civil Technology). She also received a M.Sc. degree in Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering from the UPV in 2010 (specialist pathway: Watershed Management). Finally, she received the Ph.D. degree in Water Engineering and Environment from UPV (Spain) in 2015.

She is currently a researcher at the Research Group of Hydrological and Environmental Modelling (GIMHA), which is part of the Hydraulics and Hydrology Research Area of the Research Institute of Water and Environmental Engineering (IIAMA), in the UPV (Spain).

Her research is focused on Ecohydrology and, more specifically, in riparian vegetation dynamic modelling.The main objective of her research has been to develop an integrated tool that allows the water managers to analyze the riparian vegetation communities behavior under several hydrological and climatic conditions. This tool leads to a more suitable establishment environmental flow regimes, also to determine in a more reliable manner the anthropic effects on river and riparian ecosystems. Few models were previously available for these purposes. Among them, the lack of tools to represent adequately some of the main processes that guide the plant ecosystems dynamics in riverine areas is the norm. The new model she proposed, the RVDM model (initials of Riparian Vegetation Dynamic Model), combines innovative ecohydrological approaches with the acquired knowledge on traditional sciences as Hydrology, Ecology, Geology, Botany, etc. The model has been successfully implemented in a Mediterranean semi-arid river reach. A global sensitivity analysis based on Monte Carlo simulations has been already performed successfully. In addition, global change scenarios have been analyzed.

The outcome of the research already conducted includes the participation in 15 international conferences, 4 scientific articles, and 2 national (RIBERA and SCARCE) and 1 international (RIPFLOW) projects related to this field.
