Early achievements track-record
Research record
My research career has been developed at the
Nanophotonics Technology Center (NTC, www.ntc.upv.es), which is a research center located at UPV, where I
lead now my own research group. My research activities have not only led to key
publications in internationally renowned journals such as Science, Nature Comm., Nano Lett. and Phys. Rev. Lett., but have also resulted in seven invited talks, eight
patents, and principal investigator of two STREP FP7 projects, seven national
projects and four industrial contracts with ESA and EDA (totaling >2 M€ as
PI). I started my research activities (2000-02) working in radio-on-fibre
optical systems and networks. During that period I proposed and demonstrated a
novel technique for simultaneous electro-optical modulation in baseband and
radiofrequency, which was used afterwards as the modulation technique in the
FP6 Project GANDALF (Ref. IST-507781), in which I was involved. During the
2002-04 period, I made my PhD Thesis on the implementation of passive
optical components by 2D photonic crystals under the supervision of
Prof. J. Martí. Just after finishing my PhD with the highest mark and getting a
position as Assistant Lecturer at UPV, I became interested in negative
refraction, plasmonics and metamaterials, making some important publications on
this topic. This was the seed of the “Plasmonic metamaterials” research group
at NTC, which I am currently leading, and the beginning of my career as an
independent researcher in 2008. In parallel, from 2005 to 2008 I also
participated as workpackage leader in the FP6 project PHOLOGIC (“Nanophotonic
logic gates”, Ref. IST-NMP-17158), which dealt with the implementation of high-speed
all-optical switching devices on silicon (selected paper [9]), and where I
acquired skills on on-chip nonlinear all-optical processing. From 2008 till
2013 I participated as workpackage leader in a large Spanish project
(Consolider programme, 3,5 M€ funding) on investigating the fundamental physics
and developing new optical devices based on plasmonics and metamaterials (EMET,
“Engineering metamaterials,” http://www.consolider-metamateriales.es/).
Remarkably, in all the period after my PhD, I was a major contributor to the
establishment of the NTC, which was founded officially in the year 2006 and
nowadays is a reference centre for photonics and nanotechnology in Europe.
In my
research career, I have been explored several fields including plasmonics,
metamaterials, silicon nanoantennas, transformational techniques and
optomechanical crystals. Concerning this last topic, I was the coordinator and PI
of the FP7 FET-Open project TAILPHOX (“TAILoring photon-phonon
interaction in silicon PHOXonic crystals”, Ref. 233883, www.tailphox.org).
Currently,
my research interests are focused on bringing together all of the new concepts
that I have learnt in recent years during my research in the topics mentioned
above to improve current silicon photonic circuits as well as to create novel,
advanced photonic functionalities on silicon. My group is now participating in
the European Project PHENOMEN (http://phenomen-project.eu/),
focused on building phononic functionalities in silicon chips.
Since 2001, I have co-authored more than 100
publications in international peer-reviewed journals, 22 of them as first
author and 45 as corresponding author. Furthermore, I have also co-authored
more than 100 publications in international conferences, including seven
invited talks. My h-index is 28
according to Web of Science while the total number of citations is 2,556.
PI in international projects &
contracts
I have been the PI of several projects and contracts
funded by some of the most important European funding agencies: 2 STREP
projects (FP7), 2 contracts with ESA, and 2 contracts with EDA. Besides, I have
been also the PI in 7 Spanish projects of the most competitive calls. The total
budget that I have received as PI over the last seven years is ~ 2.5 M€.
