Briefing

Antonio Martínez Millana (Valencia,1985), - Telecommunications Engineer by the Technical University of Valencia in 2009 and Master in Biomedical Engineering specialized in eHealth Systems. I own more than four years of research and development in European e-Healt projects in the ITACA research institute (http://www.itaca.upv.es) and lately in the SME Soluciones Tecnologicas para la Salud y el Bienestar (www.tsbtecnologias.es ). My research work has been mainly focused on the implementation and standardization of protocols to communicate medical sensors with mobile, desktop and cloud applications, mostly focused on diabetes management, and the design of personal health systems (PHS) in uncontrolled environments. I am HL7v2.6 Certified and active participant in Continua Health Alliance development. I have participated in several different EU funded projects within the VII Framework Program and other Spanish funded projects as well as several collaborations between La Fe Hospital and the University.

My research activity has led to participate in many congresses from 2009, publishing several papers and early days. In 2011 I won the “49k entepreneurship ideas contest”, similar to MIT 100k contest, and I had the chance to pursuit an internship in the Cambridge Innovation Center of Boston.

I gather skills and experience in software development and testing area as well as project management for ICT solutions: design, user requirements, documentation, development, integration, testing and deployment under Visual Studio framework (desktop, mobile, data bases and instalables). I have represented my company in European Commission technical audits in Brussels and managed meetings with several clients.

Abstract: Google Glass is a wearable sensor presented to facilitate access to information and assist while performing complex tasks. Despite the withdrawal of Google in supporting the product, today there are multiple applications and much research analyzing the potential impact of this technology in different fields of medicine. Google Glass satisfies the need of managing and having rapid access to real-time information in different health care scenarios. Among the most common applications are access to electronic medical records, display monitorizations, decision support and remote consultation in specialties ranging from ophthalmology to surgery and teaching. The device enables a user-friendly hands-free interaction with remote health information systems and broadcasting medical interventions and consultations from a first-person point of view. However, scientific evidence highlights important technical limitations in its use and integration, such as failure in connectivity, poor reception of images and automatic restart of the device. This article presents a technical study on the aforementioned limitations (specifically on the latency, reliability and performance) on two standard communication schemes in order to categorize and identify the sources of the problems. Results have allowed us to obtain a basis to define requirements for medical applications to prevent network, computational and processing failures associated with the use of Google Glass.

eHealth.
