RESEARCH

I have a PhD in Telecommunications by the Universitat Politècnica de València.

I am involved in two research areas: Telecommunications Networks Economics and Telecommunications and Information Society Policy.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS ECONOMICS

This research was initiated within the Network of Excellence (NoE) Euro-NF "Anticipating the Network of the Future: From Theory to Desing". Specifically, my participation was focused on the activity "The Socio Economic Aspects activity should cover: network neutrality, privacy, trust, future regulation, IPR, governance policies, among others."

The first results of this research were focused on the analysis of the interaction between ISPs competing in providing service to P2P users. Some of our contributions were the following:

• "Analysis of Price Competition under Peering and Transit Agreements in Internet Service Provision to Peer-to-Peer Users" (author's version), published at the IEEE CCNC 2011, Las Vegas.

Then, within the scope of a multidisciplinary research, this research was focused on the analysis of competition of mobile operators in new scenarios, e.g. cognitive radio networks, femtocell networks. Some of our contributions were the following:

• "Competition and bargaining in wireless networks with spectrum leasing" (author's version), published at the IEEE Globecom 2011, Houston.
• "Femtocell operator entry decision with spectrum bargaining and service competition" (author's version) , published at IEEE Communications Letters, 2012.
• "Entry game under opportunistic access in cognitive radio networks: a priority queue model" (author's version), published at the IFIP Wireless Days 2013, Valencia.
• “Entry, competition, and regulation in Cognitive Radio Scenarios: a simple Game Theory Model” (Open Access), published at Mathematical Problems in Engineering, 2012

The focus of our research during 2014-2018 was the analysis of business models for Wireless Sensor Network-based services. The support was provided by PLASMA, a project funded by the Spanish Government. Some of our main contributions are the following:

• "Game theoretical analysis of service provision for the Internet of Things based on sensor virtualization" (author's version), published at IEEE JSAC Special Issue on Game Theory for Networks, 2017.
• "Wireless Sensor Network-Based Service Provisioning by a Brokering Platform" (Open access), published at Sensors Journal, 2017.
• "Maximum-profit two-sided pricing in service platforms based on Wireless Sensor Networks" (author's version), published at IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, 2016.
• "Economic Analysis of a Multi-Sided Platform for Sensor-Based Services in the Internet of Things" (Open access), published at Sensors Journal, 2019.
• "Competition in data-based service provision: Nash equilibrium characterization", published at Future Generation Computer Systems, 2019.
• "Economic Viability of HTC and MTC Service Provision on a Common Network Infrastructure", published at IEEE CCNC 2017, Las Vegas.

Between 2019 and 2021 our research was focused on economic modelling for 5G network slicing, with funding by the Spanish Government through the project ATLAS (dynAmic neTwork sLicing in 5G rAdio acceSs). Some of our contributions were the following:

• "Competition between service providers with strategic resource allocation: application to network slicing" (Open Access), published at IEEE Access, 2021.
• "A user subscription model in mobile radio access networks with network slicing" (Working Paper available at SSRN), published at Computer Networks. 2023.
• "Economic feasibility of virtual operators in 5G via network slicing" , published at Future Generation Computer Systems, 2020.

Our current research is focused on economic models for service provision in 6G, specifically, massive data sensing scenarios, integrated sensing and communication and platform-based business models. Some of our contributions are the following:

• "Competitive Advantage of URLLC vs. eMBB for Supporting Timeliness-relevant Services", Working Paper availabel at arXiv, 2024.
• "Economics of Integrated Sensing and Communication service provision in 6G networks" (Working Paper available at arXiv), published at IEEE PIMRC 2024.
• "ISP Pricing and Platform Pricing Interaction Under Net Neutrality" (Working Paper available at SSRN), published at GECON2024.
• "Fair Cost Sharing Under Platform Two-Sided Intermediation", (Working Paper available at SSRN), published at NETGCOOP2024.
• "Entry deterrence by exploiting economies of scope in data aggregation", Working Paper available at arXiv, 2025.

Finally, we have contributed to the net neutrality debate with an analysis of search engine behavior and of backbone service provision, within the project INNIS, leaded by INRIA - Rennes. Some of our contributions were the following:

• "A game theory-based analysis of search engine non-neutral behavior" (author's version), published at the NGI Conference, 2012, Karlskrona.
• "Impact of the backbone network structure on the ISP competition" (author's version) , published at the 24th International Teletraffic Conference, 2012, Krakow.
• "Search engine and content providers: neutrality, competition and integration" (author's version) published at Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies

TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION SOCIETY POLICY

Under the Jean Monnet Professorship in Telecommunications and Information Society Policy umbrella at the Universitat Politècnica de València, chaired by Professor Antonio Alabau, I developed two research lines during 2003-2009:

• E-Government, based on the analysis of the European Union policies on e-government promotion and specifically on interoperability.
• Telecommunications Policy, based on the study of the liberalisation and harmonisation processes led by the European Commission

PhD THESIS

My doctoral and post-doctoral research efforts were developed within the Research Group GIRBA, which was affiliated to the Research Institute ITACA and now to the Communications Department, at the Universitat Politècnica de València.

My PhD Thesis was titled "Contributions to the support of the ABR service class in ATM networks by means of fair queueing", where I proposed and evaluated a new switch algorithm for ABR flow control which is based on Fair Queueing cell scheduling at the switch ports.

This PhD Thesis was the recipient for 1998 of the "LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES Award" by the "Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación/Asociación Española de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación".
