SAMARUC is a research passive acoustic monitoring system designed and build in the UPV for the study
of marine mammals and anthropogenic sounds. The system can be programmed with machine learning algorithms for
the automatic detection of different underwater acoustic events: cetacean calls and noise from human
activities mainly.
The SAMARUC system is composed of a passive acoustic recorder device and a graphical application
suite created in Matlab for the analysis of long data campaigns. It has been designed in collaboration with
marine biologists with usability in mind.
SAMARUC is being used for the assessment of the Spanish implementation of EU MSFD (Descriptor 11). So
far, we have deployed our device all around Spanish marine waters: Cabrera Archipelago Maritime National Park
(Balearic Islands), Columbretes Islands Natural Park (Castellon), Cape Sant Antoni (Denia), Bay of Biscay,
etc.
Listen to cetacean sounds and look at their spectrograms
We work on the creation of a cetacean sound database classified by marine habitats. You will find here some of the species and sounds we have identified so far. Listen and download the high quality (*.WAV) version of the sounds. You can use them as long as you mention the source and do not use the material for commercial purposes. The list will be updated, so come back regularly to find more information about new species and sounds.
