Abstract:
Designers facilitating processes of co-creation to innovate socio-technical solutions often have the need to better understand stakeholders’ familiarity with the technologies being addressed. This article investigates the utility of technology probes to elicit such insights from participants concerning emerging technologies, such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Focusing on an early phase workshop in a multi-stage co-creation project, this study scrutinizes the utilization of a custom-built application as a technology probe. Findings from the workshop shed light on how the technology probe elicited the participants' varying levels of familiarity and perceptions regarding the technologies in question. These insights enabled the designers to customize how technologies were mobilized and used in creating the representational tools needed in facilitating for further co-creation activities.
