Abstract:
In this paper, a new velocity-based finite element approach for non-linear dynamics of beam-like structures is briefly introduced. The additivity of angular velocities in local frame description, which are taken as primary unknowns along with the linear velocities, brings several benefits, such as trivial discretization and update procedure for the primary unknowns and improved stability properties of the time integrator. The novel approach introduces some new issues that need to be treated properly, such as compatibility of angular velocities over the finite element boundaries. A computationally cheap solution of the problem is presented.
