Modbus-A: Automated Slave ID Allocation Enabling Architecture for Modbus Devices on RS485/232

Abstract:
If Modbus devices are to be connected on to the same communication infrastructure, each device must be powered up individually and manually given a unique ID.This can be a time-consuming and laborious process if the system has a plurality of devices. This paper presents the architecture, implementation and testing information of Modbus-A, an architecture that allows the master device on a communication infrastructure to autonomously set the IDs of live devices, which are already connected to the bus. Furthermore, the concept is validated using a software simulator as well as using a hardware prototype.
