A Distributed Power Management Algorithm for a Self-optimizing WiFi Network

Abstract:
In this paper, we propose a fully distributed algorithm for a dense unplanned self-optimizing network of 802.11 access points. As opposed to the traditional method of having a centralized controller to collect information from all access points, our algorithm runs independently on each AP to create a cooperative network of access points, with no explicit inter-node communication. We present simulation and actual laboratory data which shows how our algorithm can significantly improve network performance in a robust and scalable manner.
