Abstract:
We have developed a device with a haptic interface that enables blind persons to perceive the environment. The device, which we call the Future Body-Finger (FB-F), measures the distance between a person and an object using an infrared sensor and transmits distance information to the user's haptic sense by the angular motions of a link. In this report on the FB-F, we (1) outline its concept, (2) describe its mechanism, and (3) demonstrate its usability by comparing it to commercially available products.
