Abstract:
There are different approaches to make office computer environments more energy efficient: terminal server environments and virtual desktop infrastructures. While in both environments money saving thin clients are used to connect a server, this paper presents an alternative approach, that uses several distributed workstations instead of a server. Therefore, this topology allows some savings concerning power consumption, as well as procurement cost, because no centralized server is required. Theoretical consideration for a typical use case showed a potential for energy savings using this approach. Moreover, the model is especially interesting for small office environments. Existing workstation computers can be used and replaced step by step through thin clients without purchasing an expensive virtualization server.
