Configuring Edge Devices That Are Not Accessible Via The Internet

Abstract:
In the context of Industrial Internet of Things and Edge Computing, there are often computing devices that run software on the edge device. In real industrial settings, these computing devices are not accessible from the Internet. This raises a problem if software components on the device require configuration changes, such as adjusting some parameters to customize software, restarting one or several applications that behave badly on the device, or rotating passwords to name a few. This paper presents a novel approach to configure software on such computing devices. The details of the cloud-based approach are presented and how the approach has successfully been applied in an industrial project.
