Abstract:
This paper explores an efficient algorithm for design and implementation of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller on the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. To create a synthesizable control algorithm, the Very High Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Development Language (VHDL) was used as a programming tool. The paper points to the possibilities of parallel computation with the aim of speeding up the control implementation. The practical application of proposed control algorithm is illustrated by a test performed on a real laboratory Direct Current (DC) motor system. The results confirm the legitimacy of using the FPGA methodology for design of control algorithms, since it improves speed, accuracy and compactness. In addition, it is cost effective and has a low power consumption, which are desirable attributes in embedded control applications.
