Abstract:
Black Swan situations and their consequences are considered extremely unlikely before they happen and make perfect sense afterwards. Two malicious exploits that triggered Black Swan situations, Emotet and WannaCry, are assessed, along with their attack sequences comprising of multiple attack vectors operating in sequence and targeted at known vulnerabilities. The early warning signs and the practical actions to prevent these types of Cyber Black Swan situations are outlined. Prevention is based on practical defence in depth controls, along with effective ongoing maintenance, with situational awareness guiding the cyber teams as to where to focus their response efforts.
