Abstract:
In recent years, the numbers of requests to download large files via large high-speed computer networks have been increasing rapidly. Typically, these requests are handled in a ``best effort'' manner, resulting in unpredictable completion times. In this paper, we consider a model where a download request either must be completed by a user-specified deadline or must be rejected if the deadline cannot be satisfied. We propose a dynamic bandwidth assignment method for reducing the call-blocking probability in a bandwidth-guaranteed network. Finally, we present simulations that show its excellent performance.
