A Survey on Smart Grid Technologies in Europe

Abstract:
The old electricity network infrastructure has proven to be inadequate, with respect to modern challenges such as alternative energy sources, security, electricity demand and energy saving policies. Moreover, ICT technologies development seems to have reached an adequate level of reliability and flexibility in order to support an entirely new concept of electricity network - the Smart Grid. In this work, we try to give a definition of what a Smart Grid is. Moreover, we will analyse the state-of-the-art of Smart Grids, not only in their technical details, but also in their management and optimization.
