Abstract:
The driving range of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) has been fairly extended during recent years, as a consequence of improvements in energy density of lithium-based batteries. As the scope of application of electric vehicles has expanded, electric motors have been used in trucks and buses, as well as simple passenger vehicles. There are several issues in electric buses for the decision of daily route and finding the optimal battery size. In this work, we propose and incorporate an electric bus powertrain model into a range estimator that takes into account slope, speed limits as well as traffic information. We introduce two case studies as applications of the proposed range estimator: (i) the fast route decision and (ii) the iteration-based bus battery sizing.
