Abstract:
A new spatio-temporal data structure for a geographic information system (GIS) is introduced and employed for various applications. First, the concept for the spatio-temporal data structure is established. The effectiveness of the data structure for management and visualization of real-world states is then demonstrated. To outline its effectiveness, real-time map update and level-of-detail representation are described. The data structure is implemented in a new type of GIS platform, denoted as a four-dimensional GIS (4D-GIS). 4D-GIS applications to social infrastructure management and monitoring are also introduced. 4D-GIS is expected to contribute to the solution of real-world problems.
