Abstract:
“Social privacy” concerns how individuals manage self-disclosure, availability, and access to information about themselves by other people when using social-driven applications. To manage social privacy, one needs to understand the level of threat implied by his information disclosure and be able to relate it to the scope of visibility granted for this information. This paper argues that the risk to personal privacy comes from the implicit information embedded in the relationships between the different elements of data collected on these networks. A proposal is made to explicitly represent such relationships and use them to model the level of threat to personal privacy on these networks. Exposure of this information will enable users to be aware of their own data and to make informed decisions on their sharing behaviour online.
