Abstract:
Abstract— People with serious physical and/or mental disabilities, such as those with spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, dementia, etc., cannot benefit from available powered wheelchairs to gain independent mobility. The objective of this paper is to provide a preliminary design platform of an autonomous wheelchair generation capable, in the long run, of helping people with severe disabilities gain independent mobility. A high-level design, design details and development are provided in this paper. The design was extensively tested on the Tennessee Technological campus. A video demo, as well as a TV news video clip will be presented in the conference.
