Security Implications of Software Defined Networking in Industrial Control Systems

Abstract:
Software-defined Networking (SDN) is appealing not only for carrier applications, but also in industrial control systems. Network engineering with SDN will result in both lower engineering cost, configuration errors and also enhance the manageabiliy of DCS. This paper provides an overview of the applicability of SDN in an control system scenario, with special focus on security and manageability. It also shows the possible enhancements to mitigate the challenges related to network segmentation and shared infrastructure situations.
