Abstract:
Mobile device technology and mobile commerce are deeply embedded in many people’s everyday lives. In this paper, we adopt Actor Network Theory to understand how consumers, merchants, service providers, mobile devices, applications, and services interact in aligned networks. Using a mobile payment system adoption case, we identify social-technical problems encountered by users. We examine how they redefine “convenience” while performing different activities under space-time limitations. The results imply that m-commerce technology and service designers should consider strategies that emphasize activity-oriented design, activity-based response, social-technical fit, and that lock users in a virtual closed network.
