Social Networking Service for Helping Each Other in the Neighborhoods

Abstract:
This research focuses on the use of Social Network Services among the elderly people in Japan, as a solution that could help to bridge the digital divide in that country. It proposes the creation of a Social Network Service for neighborhoods, in which the relationship among the young and the old is promoted. Existing design and usability guidelines for senior citizens and culture-related issues are highly taken into consideration. User-centered design method is applied to tailor the tool for testing. This paper hopes to bring new insights about how elderly people use Social Network Services in Japan and the usability challenges that they face when trying to use it.
