Abstract:
Industrial Ethernet is the preferred network technology in industrial green field deployments. Active devices interconnecting the nodes are switches. In an industrial deployment, nodes are typically located on the same Layer 2 network. Routers or firewalls are almost exclusively used at the network edges. The current trend on engineering of industrial devices is to include an embedded Ethernet switch, instead of using discrete units. This paper is giving an overview on switch implementation possibilities, with respect to performance, features, logical architecture and flexibility.
