Abstract:
Video streaming represents a big slice of Mobile Internet traffic. Even though mobile operators are using media optimization platforms, little is known about the network characteristics of this traffic. In this paper, we study the network characteristics of one of the most popular video streaming platforms of Mobile Internet: YouTube. YouTube employs the progressive download technique for video playback and therefore its traffic is bursty. We present a characterization of the traffic generated by YouTube when access via mobile broadband connections. Moreover, we also distinguish the characterization for unoptimized and optimized traffic. In this paper, we review the most popular burstiness measures and give an analysis study by evaluating them with the two different kind of traffic traces. We also present our measurement-based analytical results to derive characterization of the traffic sources. As a result, we propose the models of the traffic sources based on the experimental evaluation of the captured YouTube traffic. The proposed traffic models can be used in simulation of future work.
