Abstract:
This paper presents several aspects of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks which have been an important network phenomenon since the end of 1990s. A short introduction to this topic is given here. DoS mechanisms, such as reflection and amplification, are explained including example attacks. Also, DNS fast flux as a technique for hiding command and control communication (C&C) is described. A short overview of entropy based DDoS detection is given, and an example method explained. Certain methods for attack mitigation (most notably puzzles) are explained, as well.
