The Scrum Product Owner – Customer Collaboration & Prioritizing Requirements

Abstract:
The existing body of literature on Agile Scrum is extensive. Many authors, ([1], [2], [3], [4]), concur that the role of the Product Owner is to represent the customers' requirements to the development team and set the priorities for the work to be completed. The Agile Manifesto specifies customer collaboration as being of more importance than contract negotiation. So, we might expect that in addition to setting priorities the Product Owner role in Scrum would work closely with the Customer. This paper investigates a sample of Irish software development organizations to determine the level of adherence to Agile Scrum guidelines with regard to the two key aspects of customer collaboration and requirements prioritization.
