INTERACT: a Tool for Unit Test Based Integration of Component-based Software Systems

Abstract:
Testing complex component-based software systems is hard. Unit tests are focused but are not effective in exposing integration faults. However, integration test cases are difficult to develop and maintain. This paper presents a tool that uses unit tests to expose integration faults in component-based software systems. This is done by observing the component’s unit test cases to derive the component’s expectations of its interactions with other components. These expectations are validated using newly generated component integration test cases. Because the approach requires no new tests to be written, we consider it economical and effective.
