Abstract:
To get a closer look inside the planets and evaluate their mantle dynamics, numerical simulation of thermal convection has proved itself to be a powerful tool. In order to achieve a high resolution, to obtain faster results and to study a larger parameter range, the simulation of mantle convection in a two-dimensional spherical geometry is more efficient than a full three-dimensional spherical shell. In this work, we show the performance and results of a 2D version of GAIA, a mantle convection spherical code with strongly temperature dependent rheology.
