Vertical Handover in Wireless Mesh Networks and its Impact on Routing

Abstract:
This paper proposes a new idea to improve routing in wireless mesh networks using IEEE 802.21’s Media Independent Handover (MIH) functions. First, we evaluate the performance of a vertical handover using IEEE 802.21 protocol between WiFi and WiMax networks. Then, we present our proposal of using MIHF for optimizing the performance of IEEE 802.11s Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) routing protocols, such as Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (HWMP).
