Abstract:
Semantic web technologies promise to facilitate a long-awaited paradigm shift in the healthcare industry towards more efficiency, extended interoperability and intelligent analysis capabilities. This paper presents a critical review of current healthcare businesses incorporating semantic web technologies. Initially, it presents the potential of semantic web technologies in general and the challenges to apply them in business. State of the art businesses that use semantics to provide innovative healthcare services are pinpointed and critically reviewed. Through an analysis of their aspects, their semantic component, business models, target audience and value propositions, the competitive advantage and tangible business value of semantics in healthcare is revealed, serving as a reference for the growing number of emerging solutions in the near future.
