Abstract:
We present a prototype of a system for the tracking of animals, goods or people, by using only Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) services. The system consists of two parts: a base device and at least one location device. The base device receives the Short Message Service (SMS) sent by the location devices and forwards the messages to an application that decodes and stores the location data in a database. The location device, the part actually attached to the animal, good or person being tracked, combines reduced size and weight with extended range. We present the energy consumption profiles and the computer applications developed to test the system and discuss the results of practical tests with wild and captive birds.
