Abstract:
Occupant presence and behavior in buildings have been shown to have a significant impact on the energy consumed in buildings for space conditioning. Towards effort to improve the energy efficiency and performance of buildings, demand driven control of building systems and appliances have been proposed and implemented in a number of studies. A core component of demand-driven control in building operation is occupancy detection. The performance of the occupancy detection system impacts the controllability of demand driven applications, the accruable energy savings and comfort of building users. This paper provides initial results from an ongoing research into the development of a multi-agent system (MAS) coordinated demand–driven control application for building operations which utilizes a robust and low-energy wireless sensor network (WSN) technology for occupancy measurement.
