Abstract:
With video news gaining more and more popularity, Artificial Intelligence (AI) video editing tools could be implemented to accelerate video news production. A challenging issue, however, is the quality of AI-edited video news and the acceptance of such news by media consumers. A cross-sectional survey with 2,219 participants across three independent waves was conducted in Germany to assess audience perceptions of video news clips edited by AI-based systems and by professional human editors. All survey participants were recruited by a commercial survey company. Participants were generally unable to reliably identify whether video clips were edited by humans or AI systems. Across several quality dimensions, ratings of AI-edited and human-edited clips were descriptively similar, with overlapping confidence intervals on multiple indicators. Future research can benefit from investigating fatigue related to AI tools and testing algorithmic performance improvements.
