An Analysis of Android Smartphones as a Platform for Augmented Reality Games

Abstract:
In this work, we analyse the capabilities of an Android smartphone with the OpenGL ES API for the rendering of synthetic realistic images. The aim is to find out the facilities and the main limitations of the platform for the development of augmented reality games. Thus, our research covers mainly three fields: an analysis of the information provided by the camera, a study of the tracking and positioning capabilities of current smartphones and an outline of the rendering facilities usually found in these devices. The performance, in terms of frames per second and latency, has been tested in different smartphones, in addition to evaluate the reliability and efficiency of the sensors and the quality of rendering. In order to show all the results obtained from this study we have developed an augmented reality game trying to combine quality, performance and velocity of response.
