Decision Support System for Controlling Home Automation Appliances with Resource Constraints

Abstract:
We introduce a Decision Support System (DSS) for controlling access to embedded home automation devices working fully offline and with limited resources. To provide a hands-free and safe interface to its users, the system combines the following technologies: keyword spotting, speaker verification, automatic speech recognition and understanding, dialog management, and speech synthesis. The proposed system was implemented on an embedded device and tested in home and office environments for the English and Polish languages. In experiments, end-users gave a score of 8.4 out of 10 with respect to a subjective figure-of-merit we have proposed.
