EXPERIENCE AT THE UNIVERSIDAD POLITÉCNICA DE VALENCIA

Academic Head, M.Sc. in Planning and Management in Civil Engineering, from June 2008 to present

This M.Sc. degree is applied to the civil engineering field and it is fully supported by the School of Civil Engineering. Its purpose was to apply a holistic managerial approach to construction both from production and business standpoints. It is structured around four mandatory subjects of similar importance: project assessment, construction site administration, innovation and quality, and business management. Finally, an elective subject completes the second semester, with courses on real estate, e-business, artificial neural networks, lean construction, managerial skills, and advanced construction technology, among others.

Vice-Dean, School of Civil Engineering, from July 2004 to June 2008

Associate Professor, from May 2003 to present, Dept. of Construction Engineering

Assistant Professor, from April 2002 to April 2003, Dept. of Construction Engineering

Part Time Professor, from November 1993 to March 2002, Dept. of Construction Engineering

Research Assistant, from March 1992 to August 1992, Dept. of Construction Engineering

DEVELOPMENT OF NEW COURSES AT THE UNIVERSIDAD POLITÉCNICA DE VALENCIA

“Dirección y Gestión Integrada de Proyectos” (Integrated Project Management) is an elective course in the fifth year of the degree of B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, lecturing 3 hours per week during 15 weeks. The course was focused on teaching the basics tools of project management applied to construction from the point of view of consulting engineering firms; thus, the design project was taken as a reference for the first part, whereas the supervision of the construction works was also considered in the second part of the course. The teaching method was active-learning and participatory

Gestión de Empresas Consultoras y Constructoras 2011 (Business Management of Construction and Consulting Engineering Companies) is an elective course in the fifth year of the degree of B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, lecturing 3 hours per week during 15 weeks. The course was a follow up of the mandatory course on Business Management, but specifically applied to construction companies (first part) and consulting engineering firms (second part). Examples taken from the real life were taken to show the students the application of the basic knowledge acquired in the core course

Gestión de Proyectos” (Project Management) is a mandatory course in the M.Sc. in Planning and Management in Civil Engineering, lecturing 3 hours per week during 15 weeks. The course explains the fundamentals of project management, applying the Project Management Book (PMI) methodology to the context of the construction industry and the Spanish scenario. The course also deals with the earned value methodology as well as other techniques like the last planner system

Economía, Legislación y Organización de Empresas” (Economics, Law and Business Organization) is a mandatory course for freshmen students at their first year in the degree of B.Sc. in Civil Engineering. It is designed as an introduction to the basic vocabulary of the construction industry (first quarter of the course); later it deals with the fundamentals of law and regulations affecting the infrastructure life cycle. The economics part of the course is focused on the general micro and macro economics vocabulary, focusing also in production and costs. Finally, the business management part also pretends to give the fundamental concepts of the main functions of management: planning, organization, leading, and control

“Lean Construction” is an elective course in the M.Sc. in Planning and Management in Civil Engineering. It introduces the students in the lean philosophy considering its roots in the manufacturing industry (Toyota Production System). Later it explains the applications of these concepts to the construction industry. The lean project delivery system is also discussed. Last part of the course (50% of it) is focused on the last planner system, its fundamentals, applications, and quantitative computer tools
