Abstract
Since 1995 Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay) has been recognized as world
heritage site by the UNESCO, based on criteria IV“…to be an outstanding
example of a type of building, architectural or technological ensemble or
landscape which illustrates (a) significant stage(s) in human history ”; This
award implies great recognition but also means a huge responsibility for the
community. A recent initiative to promote the UNESCO appointment, owing
to the new international cooperation project “Función social del muralismo
uruguayo del siglo XX y XXI como vehículo y modelo de activación patrimonial
sustentable: Descentralización, identidad y memoria”, consists on the recovery
of its mural painting heritage, and in particular the mural painted by Felipe Seade
in 1938 “Alegoría al trabajo”. The wall painting, located in the emblematic
“Casa de la Cultura”, has witnessed a series of changes experienced by the
country during the last century. It is an example of Uruguayan mural painting
with social connotations, conceptually linked to Mexican mural Art and with
technical aspects aiming to introduce traditional painting techniques. From its
creation until 1981 the piece suffered neglect, disdain and vandalism (a large
number of deep inscriptions, eroded areas and several missing pieces), even an
attempt to destroy it completely. At this moment the artist and Seade´s disciple,
Dardo Ingold, stops the process of decay and starts a procedure of recovery
with the intention of rescuing the work. The damage is so severe that Ingold
