In May 2013 the conference “Modern And Contemporary Mural Paintings:
Technique, Conservation And Access (MCMP 2012)” was held at the
Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. The forum evidenced the growing
interest currently devel-oped worldwide on modern and contemporary
murals, which are not always under-stood as part of our heritage. Despite
being public art and so often in-between spon-taneity, ephemeral art and
even non-legal manifestations, the topics discussed during the conference
evidenced a significant interest among the international conservation
community. The debate among specialists from Canada, USA, Mexico,
Argentina, Uruguay, Italy, Austria, Germany, Portugal and Spain evidenced
that this new con-cept of heritage attracts the attention of so many
institutions and experts worldwide. This has recently led to the formation of
some international networks that understand the conservation needs of such
particular artworks but also the huge potential in terms of the development
of new resources for cultural exploitation. After the con-ference, a working
network specifically focused on this topic was created with ex-perts from Latin
American countries and as a part of the RICAC Network of the MNCACRS
(Museum of Contemporary Art Reina Sofia, Madrid). Their main work-ing
areas were presented at the last conference organized by the MNCACRS
and are:
