Environmental concerns at the Spanish wine
industry

The wine sector, as almost all of the food industry, is going through a period of
strong and rapid changes caused by globalization, changes in the population
struc-ture or by the emergence of new lifestyles. Most of these changes have
to do with the environment as the food industry operates in an economy and
a society increasingly aware of environmental problems. In the case of the
wine industry, environmental awareness is spreading with speed and strength
throughout the planet. In this line, throughout the world, different authors
point that the wine industry is in the early stages of a deep transformation
based on the principles and practices of the “green business”. Many authors
relate environmental stewardship with the competitiveness of the wine sector
in different places such as Australia, California or New Zealand. In-deed, in
aspects related to the environment of the wine industry seems to move to-wards
self-regulation especially through the ISO 14001 environmental certification or
other systems of environmental certification as ecolabels.
Spain is one of the leading industries in the wine industry. In fact, it is the country
with more vineyard surface, the world’s third-largest producer and second
exporter in volume after Italy. The Spanish wine industry is facing important
challenges and many of these have to do with environmental awareness. In the
specific case of the wine industry there is a growing pressure to improve the
environmental performance to-gether with the presence of a environmentally
consumer attitude. Also the wine indus-try stands out by a constant search for
