Fishing tourism situation in Spain

Traditional fishing is in a critical situation for their economic, social and envi-
ronmental problems. Moreover, fishing harbors in the Mediterranean usually
are locat-ed in touristic areas. This, so far, only caused problems between the
tourism industry and the fishing sector. However, both activities must find ways
to empathize. The fishing tourism offers an additional attraction and a cultural
alternative to the tradi-tional sun and beach tourism. On the other hand, tourism
is a chance to get extra in-come for fishermen, while reducing the catch and
get to know and to value the fishery. The European Union and other institutions
have been emphasizing the importance of promoting fishing tourism.. There
are successful experiences in Italy, especially in Sardinia. However, in Spain the
fishing tourism is in a very early stage. Only in Gali-cia there are significant
experiences with tourism onboard, while Catalonia has devel-oped a tourism
related to the mussels at the mouth of the Ebro River. Until now, there are many
legal and financial difficulties related with the fishing tourism. The fisheries
legislation prevented from boarding tourists and, so far, this has been the main
prob-lem. There are several experiences that make up fishing and tourism but
most of them part-way through museums, crafts, food festivals, etc. But they are
very isolated expe-riences, and in many cases without a continuity. Anyway, it
remains to develop the potential of fishing tourism in our country. A first step for
understanding the problems of fishing tourism is to clarify the concept. We must
distinguish the nautical tourism from fishing tourism. Also within the fishing
tourism have been used terms like iti-turismo, marine tourism, fishing tourism,
