Abstract
This research is focused on the Uruguayan muralist production of the XX and
XXI centuries and the recent recognition of a creative movement of muralists
in some regions, seeking the creation and consumption of a popular culture
through public open spaces with a strong connotation of the social function of
muralism.
The symbolic dimension these murals represent to the society needs to be
joined with their cultural promotion and the development of museum proposals
for these heritage sites.
Their importance would generate new forms of distribution and dissemination,
with the possibility to implement local models to promote a responsible
and sustainable nature based cultural tourism across the principles of local
community development.
Research projects: Creative industries (PAID2012-487-UPV), Uruguayan XX century muralism as a
tool and model for a cultural local sustainable development (11-CAP1-0136-MAEC y PAID2011-
2035-UPV) and Design and Implementation of cultural inclusive policies: contemporary Uruguayan
muralism as a driver of a sustainable heritage activation (HAR2012-32060, MEyC).
